Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a teenager. Ford's interest in acting began when she was young. She joined the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time but Ford realized it was not the right location for her. Ford then applied to be a student for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was not able to graduate in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her debut on television on the show Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage, and joined the company's season 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
